Hey everyone,
I wanted to open a constructive discussion about the current state of Mage in PvP on OctoWow. I’m not here to make a cry post or demand massive buffs, but I want to talk about where Mages stand right now and see if the few other PvP Mages out there feel the same way.
Every class has received major buffs and new PvP utility to keep up with the evolving meta. While I’m not claiming Mages were directly nerfed (though we definitely need to talk about the impact of the overall damage dampening), it feels like Mages were entirely left behind during this rebalancing process. As a result, the Mage has largely lost its core PvP identity because almost every class can now counter or invalidate the Mage’s key strengths.
Class Breakdown & Current Issues:
Warriors: They received a non-CD Hamstring, which turns them into absolute killing machines—especially when paired with a Free Action Potion. Honestly, I can live with this, but it’s a tough match.
Rogue: Being slowed from a 30-yard range by a throwing weapon feels absurd. I understand the intent, but the cooldown is far too short. Being 30 yards away from a melee class just to get hit-lagged while casting and perma-slowed makes no sense.
Hunters: The pet damage reduction was a good step, and their damage feels more reasonable now. However, the short cooldown 1,5min with 16 sec time on their pet CC-immunity talent makes it nearly impossible to control them. Fighting Hunters without Ice Barrier is already brutal, and pushing into melee range to blindspot them doesn't work anymore since melee Hunter is strong now. If we can't reliably slow or CC the pet, we have no breathing room. Why does this tool have such a short CD when other classes hold massive CDs for similar power?
Specs & Utility Problems:
Mages haven't received any meaningful PvP buffs—almost every adjustment made was purely for PvE (like Icicles no longer proc'ing instant casts in PvP).
Arcane: You have decent damage, but you are glass. Without a proper shield, every incoming hit causes spell pushback, making casting absolute hell.
Frost: Ice Barrier solves the pushback issue, but non-critical Frost damage is frustratingly low. Casting a 2.5-second Frostbolt for a weak 400–500 damage through dampening feels terrible. You can still win 1v1s with good movement and utility, but you often run oom before finishing the kill.
Possible Small Tweaks to Consider:
Mana Shield: Even with the set bonus and 2 points invested into it, Mana Shield is in a terrible state. For something that takes up a valuable set bonus slot, it needs to actually absorb meaningful damage or offer pushback protection.
Pushback Reduction: Giving Mages passive or baseline spell pushback reduction across trees so non-Frost specs aren't completely helpless against ranged pushback.
Mages are still solid in isolated 1v1s against certain melees or casters if Counterspell is up, but under current standards, the class design feels outdated compared to what everyone else got.
Do the other Mages out there agree, or are you finding success with different setups? Let’s discuss.
